Garton’s homer gives Royals win over London in runfest

LONDON – Josh Garton’s first homer of the season helped lift the Guelph Royals to a 14-11 victory over the London Majors in an Intercounty Baseball League runfest at Labatt Park Tuesday.

Garton clobbered a three-run homer with one out in the top of the ninth, one batter after Corey Morro’s single had knocked Kyle Kush in with the tying run after Kush had tripled. J.D. Williams was intentionally walked before Corey Morro collected his lone hit of the game.

The four-run outburst in the ninth gave the Royals at least a single run in six consecutive innings and allowed the locals to come back from a five-run deficit at the end of the sixth inning.

London was held scoreless in seven of the innings, the hosts’ runs coming in the fifth inning (five runs) and sixth inning (six runs).

That the teams would eventually combine for 25 runs seemed unlikely at the end of the third inning when the game was still scoreless, although they’d collected a total of eight hits. The Royals then started their run of runs with four in the fourth, one apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, three in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Yuki Narita started for the Royals and gave up five earned runs off 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Kyle Thomas was touched for three earned runs off two hits and three walks before getting the final out of the fifth inning.

Yomar Concepcion came in to pitch the final four innings and he picked up the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, off six hits and a walk and also had seven strikeouts.

Robert Mackie made his first start for London and was also replaced in the fifth inning, Keith Kandel coming in to pitch with one out in the inning. The Royals collected five runs, three earned, off eight hits and three walks off the starter, Mackie had two strikeouts.

Kandel went 2 2/3 innings and yielded four runs, three earned, off seven hits. He had one strikeout.

Braeden Ferrington tossed two innings and he surrendered five earned runs off five hits and a walk. He had three strikeouts.

Nine batters on each team had at least one hit in the game.

Garton hit a homer, double and two singles while Kush clubbed his triple, a double and a single and Williams and Ethan Hammond each hit a double and two singles. Tristan Pompey and Justin Interisano connected for two singles apiece and Corey Morro, Malik Collymore and Noah Roberts each hit a single.

Eduardo De Oleo, Cleveland Brownlee and Kayne McGee had three singles apiece for London while Starling Joseph hit a homer and a single, Tommy Reyes-Cruz hit a double and a single and Brett Graham hit two singles. Byron Reichstein contributed a double and Jordan Schulefand and Will Pollard each added a single.

The teams also combined for seven errors – four by the Royals. They helped make the nine-inning game four minutes short of four hours in duration.

The Royals are sixth in the standings at 14-19 while the Majors are seventh at 10-20. The two teams had played in the extra game to decide first place in the league last year.

Welland Jackfish lead at 24-7 and are followed by the Barrie Baycats (21-10), Kitchener Panthers (20-13), Toronto Maple Leafs (16-14) and Hamilton Cardinals (15-17). Brantford Red Sox are eighth at 6-26.

The game was the second of four consecutive road games for the Royals. They’re to play the Panthers at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and the Cardinals at Hamilton’s Bernie Arbour Stadium Friday at 7:35 p.m. before they’re to host the Cardinals at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
