Gillespie gets shutout as Storm clobber Erie Otters

GUELPH – Brayden Gillespie stopped 33 shots to record his first shutout of the OHL season as the Guelph Storm pummeled the Erie Otters 8-0 Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm started slowly with a shorthanded goal the lone tally of the first period. They extended their lead with four goals in the second period including a pair that came 10 seconds apart. That quick pair were part of a trio of goals that were scored in 2:51 in the final four and a half minutes of the period.

Eight players scored for the Storm as Braeden Bowman, Gavin Grundner, Jake Karabela, Hunter McKenzie, Vilmer Alriksson, Charlie Paquette, Jett Luchanko and Michael Buchinger netted single goals. Parker Snelgrove and Bowman each had two assists while single assists were registered by Chandler Romeo, McKenzie, Buchinger, Quinn Beauchesne, Leo Serlin, Wil McFadden and Max Namestnikov.

Erie outshot the Storm 33-22, but were scoreless on two power plays while the locals went 2-for-4 with a manpower advantage.

Nolan Lalonde started in net for the Otters. He was replaced by Jacob Gibbons at 15:50 of the second period after yielding four goals on 14 shots. Gibbons gave up four goals on eight shots the rest of the way.

The win was the third in as many regular-season outings for the Storm who are the league’s lone unbeaten squad.

Guelph leads the Western Conference at 3-0-0-0 and are followed by the Soo Greyhounds and Kitchener Rangers, both at 3-1-0-0, London Knights at 2-1-0-1, Owen Sound Attack at 2-1-0-0, Sarnia Sting at 2-2-0-0, Saginaw Spirit at 1-1-0-0, Windsor Spitfires at 1-2-0-0, Flint Firebirds at 0-2-0-0 and Erie at 0-3-0-0.

The Storm are to play the Knights at London’s Budweiser Gardens Saturday at 7 p.m.
