Gomes scores again, Gryphon soccer women edge Laurier

GUELPH – Christina Gomes continued her scoring hot streak as she netted the lone goal of the game as the Guelph Gryphons edged the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 in OUA women’s soccer play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Gomes scored her career-best fifth goal of the season and fourth in five games on her lone shot of the game.

The Gryphs outshot Laurier 8-4 and they took four corner kicks while the Golden Hawks took five.

Guelph was also called for five fouls, two more than Laurier.

Rookie goalkeeper Sabrina Spano was in net for the Gryphs and she recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

The Gryphs are third in the OUA West at 6-2-2 while Laurier is fifth at 4-4-2. Top six qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs are to finish their regular season this weekend with games against the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-10-0) both Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
