Green Gaels girls get by Bears to move on to semifinals

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels advanced to the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby semifinals with a 25-14 victory over the Orangeville Bears in quarter-final play Thursday on the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.

GC led 15-0 at halftime while Orangeville had a converted try before and after a pair of unconverted tries by the Gaels in the second half.

Sam Aljoe had two tries for GCVI while Gwen Rankin, Lily Evans and Celia Harvie had one apiece.

The Gaels are to play the Ross Royals at Ross in the semifinals Monday at 3 p.m.

 

Ross 48 Centre Wellington 0

The Royals struck for eight tries in the victory.

D. Eddy had two tries and three converts while S. Brown added two tries and a convert. Getting one try apiece were M. Martin, S. Abouchacra, A. Sarabura and M. Mau.

 

Erin 21 Centennial 0

Centennial struck for three tries in the match.

Individual scoring details were not reported.

Erin is to host the Centre Dufferin Royals in Monday’s semifinals at 4 p.m. on the Erin Public School field.

Centre Dufferin defeated the Bishop Macdonell Celtics in Wednesday’s lone game.

 

Senior Boys Rugby

Matt Robinson scored a pair of tries for Guelph CVI Green Gaels with a 38-0 victory over the Erin Raiders Thursday at Varsity Field.

Dennis Szabo had a try and a convert while getting one try apiece were Jagger Sheridan, Logan Cako and Josei Yoshioka. Alexander Lukens kicked two converts and Thomas Nasso kicked one.

The unbeaten Gaels lead the league at 5-0-0 while the Lourdes Crusaders are at 4-1-0 and Ross Royals are at 4-0-0. Centre Wellington Falcons and Centennial Spartans are both at 1-3-0 while Erin and the Centre Dufferin Royals are both at 0-4-0.

The league is to wrap up its regular season with matches Monday and Wednesday.

Brendan Boys had a pair of tries for Lourdes while single tries were added by Tyler Azzopardi, Griffin Kerfoot and Peyton McKenzie. Max Wright kicked three converts.

Centre Wellington’s scorer was unavailable.

 

Ross 55 Centennial 0

Charlie Thurtell converted four tries for Ross while Max LeBlanc, Zach Brisbin, Luke Van Dam,Isaiah Hare, Troy MacDonald, Kona Kim and Haven Marks each scored a try. Liam Thornton also had a convert.

 

Junior Boys Rugby

The Ross Royals and Guelph CVI Green Gaels are headed for a showdown for first place after the Gaels scored a 62-5 win over the Erin Raiders at Varsity Field in Thursday’s lone game.

Ross and GCVI have identical 3-0-0 records while the Centre Dufferin Royals are third in at 1-2-0. Centre Wellington Falcons are at 1-3-0 and have completed their regular season while Erin is fifth at 0-3-0.

The Gaels scored on their first four possessions in Thursday’s win over Erin and led 35-5 at halftime. GCVI scored 10 tries during the match.

Carter Hashim scored two of the tries for the Gaels while Malin Hazl had a try and two converts and Oliver Hua had a try and one convert. Collecting one try apiece were Thomas Farrell, AJ Senicar, Vigo Kramer, Meher Dwibashyam, Quinn Cottenie and Carter Scheffold-Higdon while Alistair Chong, Nate Prince and Brendon Le each kicked a convert.

Paquette had the try for Erin.

Ross and GCVI are to complete their regular seasons Monday in a 5 p.m. match at Ross.
