Green Gaels quick out of gate to clip Falcons

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels used a fast start to head on their way to a 59-42 victory over the Centre Wellington Falcons in District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball play Tuesday at GCVI.

The win moves the Gaels into a three-way tie for third place in the eight-team league.

The Gaels jumped into a 25-9 lead by the end of the first quarter before the teams battled fairly evenly throughout the remainder of the game.

GCVI led 41-24 at halftime and 48-28 after the third quarter.

Jasmine Liban led the Gaels with 20 points and was followed by Phoebe James with 11, Samantha Aljoe with nine and Margherita Fumei with eight.

Natalie Abra hit four three-pointers to help her record a game-high 21 points for Centre Wellington. Lara Thys and Lauren Mullin each added six points.

Orangeville Bears and Centennial Spartans are tied atop the league with perfect 5-0 records. GCVI, Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Ross Royals are each at 3-2 while the Lourdes Crusaders are at 1-4 and the St. James Lions and Centre Wellington are both at 0-5.

Ayla Corrigale had a game-high 17 points for Orangeville while Chloe Regimbal added 12.

Sikar and Sam Tesfit Ezra each had 14 for Ross.

 

Bishop Macdonell 60 Lourdes 26

Talya Kridli struck for 25 points for Bishop Mac while Sydney Richardson contributed 23.

Ciara Hayne had nine for Lourdes while McKenna Codrington chipped in with five.

 

Centennial 46 St. James 29

Jenna Davey led Centennial with a 22-point outing while Haley McMillan gathered 13.

Arielle Balmelero had 18 for St. James while Eval W. collected five.

 

Junior Girls’ Basketball

Ross 58 Orangeville 13

Ross had three players hit double digits in scoring — Sienna Monk with 18, Alex Blashuk with 12 and Isabelle Gusba with 11.

Walker had five for Orangeville.

 

Bishop Macdonell 63 Lourdes 17

Maeve Bedard struck for 16 points for Bishop Mac while Vera Sewell contributed 10.

Jwokmeer Omot had 13 points for Lourdes while Karlee Hemstreet had the other four.

 

St. James 38 Centennial 36

A. Lewis gathered 15 points for St. James and G. Jones hit for 14.

Camryn Stam and Dana Hasson each had 12 for Centennial.

 

Guelph CVI 45 Centre Wellington 29

J. Genidy gathered 20 points for GCVI while G. Judge contributed eight.

Maggie Long had 16 for Centre Wellington.
