Gryphon field hockey women in West Division cellar

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons find themselves in unfamiliar territory following the opening weekend of the OUA women’s field hockey season.

The Gryphs are in the basement of the four-team West Division following a loss and a tie against East Division opponents.

Guelph opened its season with a scoreless tie with the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston Saturday before they were downed 5-2 by the Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto Sunday.

Maryam Maamoun had the shutout in the tie with Queen’s.

The Gryphs scored both of their goals against Toronto in the third quarter Sunday. Harper Griffin and Isla MacPherson connected for those tallies.

Toronto had the lone goal of the first quarter and led 2-0 at halftime. The hosts were up 3-2 after the third quarter.

Elizabeth Assimes scored twice for the victors while single goals were added by Molly Coop, Rebecca Carvalho and Molly Cooper-Gray.

Waterloo Warriors lead the West Division at 2-0-0 while McMaster Marauders and Western Mustangs are both at 1-1-0.

York Lions top the East Division at 2-0-0 and they’re followed by Toronto at 1-1-0, Queen’s Gaels at 0-1-1 and McGill Martlets at 0-2-0.

The Gryphs are to resume league play with a pair of 11 a.m. games in the Gryphon Soccer Complex this weekend. They’re to host York Saturday and McGill Sunday.
