Gryphon field hockey women rally to top Western

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for four consecutive goals as they dropped the Western Mustangs 4-1 in OUA women’s field hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Western opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first quarter before the Gryphs came back with two goals in the second quarter and single goals in the third and fourth quarters.

Madison Martin, Elly Peters, Eva Cuddihy and Harper Griffin had a goal apiece for Guelph.

Anna Costanzo scored for Western, helped by Payten Lang.

The Gryphs outshot Western 7-3 while the Mustangs took eight penalty corners, one more than Guelph.

The Mustangs were called for 27 fouls while the Gryphs were called for 11.

The result leaves the Gryphs second in the West Division at 2-2-1 and Western fourth at 1-4-0. Waterloo Warriors lead the division at 4-1-0 while the McMaster Marauders are third at 2-3-0.

The Gryphs and Mustangs are to meet again Sunday at Western’s Mustangs Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
