Gryphon hockey men clipped by Brock’s late goals

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of the game as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Brock Badgers in their OUA men’s hockey home opener Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The game was the first game appearance of the season on their home ice as their five preseason games, including a pair of contests with NCAA opponents last weekend, were all on the road. So, too, was a 2-1 loss to the Nipissing Lakers in their league opener Sept. 23 at North Bay.

The Gryphs never led in Thursday’s game, but also never trailed by more than a goal until Tyler Burnie scored an empty-netter for Brock with 47 seconds to go in the third.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Brock scored the lone goal of the second. The hosts pulled even in the second minute of the third, but the Badgers shot ahead for good 11 minutes later.

Anthony Tabak and Griffin Wilson scored for the Gryphs while assists went to Nolan Forster, Liam Ham, Tristan De Jong and Giordano Biondi.

Ethan Sims, Matthew O’Brien, Riley Gannon and Burnie tallied for Brock. Getting one assist apiece were Burnie, Cole Tymkin, Christophe Cote, Zach Taylor and Jacob Roach.

Brock outshot the Gryphs 41-22. Tanner Wickware had 37 saves in the Gryphon net while Connor Ungar had 20 saves for Brock.

Both of Guelph’s goals came on the power play as they went 2-for-4 with a manpower advantage and Brock was scoreless on three power plays.

The game was the first of four consecutive home games for the Gryphs (0-2-0-0). Next up is a match against the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-2-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
