Gryphon hockey men doubled up by fifth-ranked Brock

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three consecutive goals to the fifth-ranked Brock Badgers as they were doubled 6-3 in OUA men’s hockey play Friday at the Canada Games arena.

The Gryphs held a one-goal lead with 3:52 to go in the middle frame, but the Badgers tied it exactly two minutes later and went ahead for good 33 seconds after that.

Brock’s third goal in their three in a row came at 7:06 of the third. While Guelph got the gap back to a single goal 55 seconds later, the Badgers secured the win with two goals in the final seven minutes of the third, their last goal being scored into an empty net in the final minute.

Brock scored the lone goal of the first period and the Badgers led 3-2 after the second.

Liam Ham, Anthony Tabak and Hunter Brazier scored for the Gryphs while single assists went to Jonah De Simone, Tabak, Nolan Forster, Jacob Winterton and Zev Podolski.

Jacob Roach had a hat trick for the Badgers as he scored Brock’s final three goals of the match. Jordan Stock, Tyler Burnie and Zach Taylor each had single goals while Burnie had three assists and Cole Tymkin had two. Getting one apiece were Ethan Sims, Rylan Thiessen, Matthew Riva, Matthew Barnes and Jonah Boria.

Brock outshot the Gryphs 47-36 and was scoreless on four power plays while Guelph was scoreless on five.

Tanner Wickware had 41 saves for the Gryphs while Connor Ungar had 33 for Brock.

Brock leads the OUA West at 12-1-0 while Guelph is fifth at 7-6-0.

The game was the first of six consecutive road games for the Gryphs whose next home game is Jan. 5.

The Gryphs are to play the Waterloo Warriors (8th in OUA West at 3-10-0) Friday at 7 p.m. at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields arena and they’re also to play the eighth-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues (3rd in OUA West at 9-4-0) at Toronto’s Varsity Arena next Saturday at 7 p.m.
