Gryphon hockey men nipped by Nipissing in opener

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s hockey season with a 2-1 loss to the Nipissing Lakers Saturday night at the North Bay Memorial Gardens.

A power-play goal by Michael Palandra with 5:38 to go in the third period proved to be the winner for Nipissing.

Guelph’s lone goal was also a power-play marker as Nathan Allensen tallied with 33 seconds left in the second period. Nolan DeGurse assisted on the goal.

Guelph’s goal came just shy of 11 and a half minutes after Reilly Mayne had opened the scoring for the hosts. Mathieu Franche assisted on that goal while Elvis Gorontzy-Slack assisted on the winner.

The Gryphs outshot Nipissing 27-26 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Lakers were 1-for-4.

Tanner Wickware was in net for Guelph while Nipissing went with Zach Roy in goal.

The Gryphs get a week away from game play before tangling with a pair of NCAA teams in exhibition play in New York State. They’re to play the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers in Troy Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. and the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers at Rochester Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.

Next OUA play for the Gryphs is their home opener against the Brock Badgers Oct. 12. Game time at the Gryphon Centre is 7:30 p.m.
