Gryphon hockey men nipped by Ottawa in preseason

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a goal in the final five minutes of the game as they were edged 6-5 by the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA men’s hockey preseason play Sunday at the Minto Sports Complex.

The goal put an end to a comeback by the Gryphs who scored four consecutive goals, three by Tristan De Jong, in the second half of the game.

Ottawa led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

Jacob Winterton and Ethan Doyle added the other goals for the Gryphs while Giordano Biondi and Nathan Allensen each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Doyle, Nolan DeGurse, Jonah De Simone, Winterton, Luke Kutkevicius and Anthony Tabak.

Luka Verreault scored the game-winner for Ottawa with 4:16 to go in the third period. Bradley Chenier scored twice earlier in the game while single goals were netted by Max Grondin, Peter Stratis and Mathieu Desgagnes. Anthony Poulin, Evan Boucher, Stratis and Keenan MacIsaac each had two assists while Verreault and Vincent Labelle had one assist apiece.

The Gee-Gees outshot the Gryphs 42-34. Guelph was 2-for-7 on its power play while Ottawa was 1-for-6.

Colton Incze was in goal for the first two periods for the Gryphs while Brendan Cregan played the third. Incze had 27 saves while Cregan had nine.

Zach Dietz played one period in net for Ottawa while Francesco Lapenna played two periods. Dietz had eight saves and Lapenna had 21.

The loss was the second in as many preseason outings for the Gryphs.

They’re to play the Brock Badgers in the annual preseason Steel Blade game at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines Sept. 22, the night before they’re to open their regular season against the Nipissing Lakers at North Bay Memorial Gardens. Both games have 7 p.m. starting times.
