Gryphon hockey men shut out by McGill Redbirds

MONTREAL – The Guelph Gryphons returned from their OUA men’s hockey weekend in Montreal with a pair of losses, the second one being a 3-0 blanking by the McGill Redbirds Saturday night at the McConnell Arena.

The Gryphs had lost 6-2 to the fourth-ranked Concordia Stingers Friday night.

After a scoreless first period Saturday, McGill scored once in the second and twice in the third.

Mathieu Gagnon, Maxime Blanchard and former Guelph Storm forward Eric Uba each had a goal and an assist for McGill. Thomas Belzile, Brandon Frattaroli and William Rouleau also had one assist apiece.

The Gryphs were outshot 48-16 and were scoreless on two power plays while McGill went 2-for-4 on its power play.

Brendan Cregan had 45 saves in the Guelph net while Alexis Shank had 16 for the shutout for the Redbirds.

The Gryphs were outshot 112-42 in the two games in Montreal and have yielded an average of 38 shots against per game through seven regular-season games this season and they’ve taken an average of 27 shots per game.

Brock Badgers lead the OUA West at 7-1-0 while the Toronto Varsity Blues are at 5-3-0 and Toronto Metropolitan Bold and Windsor Lancers are both at 4-2-0. Lakehead Thunderwolves are at 3-3-1 while the Gryphs and Waterloo Warriors are both at 3-4-0 and are followed by the Laurier Golden Hawks at 2-5-1, York Lions at 2-5-0 and Western Mustangs at 0-7-0.

McGill is seventh in the OUA East at 3-2-1.

The Gryphs have a pair of home games next weekend as they’re to host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (eighth in OUA East at 2-3-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and ninth-ranked Windsor Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Both games are to be played at the Gryphon Centre.
