Gryphon hockey women close preseason with another win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons completed their OUA women’s hockey preseason with a 4-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

It was the fifth win in six preseason outings for the Gryphs who’ll be led into the season by interim head coach Katie Mora.

A former Gryphon captain and Guelph native, Mora takes over from Rachel Flanagan who has taken a year’s leave of absence to join the Toronto franchise in the new Professional Women’s Hockey Association, not to be confused with the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, as an assistant coach. Flanagan will stay be available to the Gryphons as a program consultant.

Mora will be in her sixth season on the Gryphon bench, the previous five as an associate coach. She played five seasons with the team and was away from the program for one season before joining the coaching staff.

The Gryphs are to open their regular season Oct. 14 against the Windsor Lancers at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
