Gryphon hockey women drop Nipissing

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons gave up the first goal of the game and then came storming back for a 6-1 win over the Nipissing Lakers in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and the Gryphs led 5-1 after the second with three of the period’s goals coming in the first six minutes of the second.

Hannah Tait had a hat trick for the Gryphs while single goals were netted by Tori Verbeek, Maya Graham and Tiana Faccio. Sydnie Miller had two assists while single assists were recorded by Meaghan Chittick, Verbeek, Rylee Davison, Chihiro Suzuki, Maeve Sutherland-Case, Katelyn Dance, Tait and Jaime Magoffin.

Abby Lunney scored midway through the first period for the Lakers while Tessa Kosec had an assist.

The Gryphs were outshot 32-31, but went 2-for-4 on their power-play while Nipissing was scoreless on two power plays.

Martina Fedel had 31 saves for the Gryphs while Chantelle Sandquist and Sladics Jordan combined for 25 saves for the Lakers.

The win leaves the Gryphs with a win in regulation time, a win in a shootout and a loss in a shootout.

The Gryphs have a pair of afternoon games next week, both on the road. They’re to play the Toronto Metropolitan Bold at the Mattamy Athletics Centre Saturday at 2:15 p.m. and the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Icefield arena Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
