Gryphon hockey women edge Waterloo in preseason outing

WATERLOO – Jaime Magoffin’s power-play goal 31 seconds into overtime lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 2-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA women’s hockey preseason play Saturday at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields arena.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game.

Tori Verbeek opened the scoring midway through the first period on a goal assisted by Rylee Davison.

That stood as the game’s only goal until Kassidy McCarthy tied it for Waterloo midway through the third. Andrea Murray picked up an assist.

Verbeek assisted on the winning goal.

The Gryphs outshot Waterloo 35-26. Martina Fedel had 25 saves for the Gryphs while Mikayla Schnarr had 33 for Waterloo.

Guelph went 1-for-8 on its power play while Waterloo was scoreless on two power plays.

The Gryphs are 3-1-1 in their preseason that they’re to complete with another game against Waterloo Thursday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
