Gryphon hockey women edged by Laurier in OT
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons were in another OUA women’s hockey league game decided by a single goal Friday night at the Gryphon Centre, but were on the short end of the score this time.
The Laurier Golden Hawks scored a power-play goal 4:49 into overtime to edge the Gryphs 1-0.
It was the fourth consecutive game with a one-goal difference for the Gryphs. The loss put an end to a five-game win streak.
Olivia MacMillan chipped a rebound in for the winning goal while Elle Spencer and Brianna Bowman collected assists.
The goal came about a minute and a half after Guelph’s Maya Graham received a minor penalty for checking from behind and the automatic game misconduct that goes with it.
That penalty came a couple of minutes after Graham was stopped on a breakaway in the three-on-three overtime.
The Golden Hawks outshot the Gryphs 32-26 including an 8-2 advantage in the extra time.
Martina Fedel had 25 saves for the Gryphs while Acadia Carlson had 32 for Laurier.
The Gryphs lead the OUA West at 6-2-2-1 while Laurier is second at 5-3-0-3.
The Gryphs and Golden Hawks are to tangle again Thursday at 11 a.m. at Waterloo’s Sun Life Financial Arena.
