Gryphon hockey women edged in preseason match

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA women’s hockey preseason when they were edged 5-4 by the Laurier Golden Hawks Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs had won their previous three preseason outings.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Laurier grabbed a 4-3 lead by the end of the second period.

Tori Verbeek, Tiana Faccio, Maeve Sutherland-Case and Jayden Calder each scored a goal for the Gryphs while Jaime Magoffin had a pair of assists. Getting one assist each were Rylee Davison, Katelyn Dance, Verbeek, Jessica Kouleas and Vanessa Bueti.

Ella Jackson and Hayley Szymanowski had two goals apiece for Laurier while Emerie Maltby had the other goal. Single assists were recorded by Elle Spencer, Kylie Laliberte, Brianna Bowman, Grace Sumi and Sophia Lombardo.

Both of Szymanowski’s goals put Laurier ahead. Her first one came in the second period, 51 seconds after the Golden Hawks had tied the score 2-2. She fired in the game-winner with 7:41 to go in the third, 48 seconds after the Gryphs had tied it.

The Gryphs have a pair of preseason games against the Waterloo Warriors before they’re to open their regular season.

They’re to play the Warriors at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefield arena Saturday at 5 p.m. and at the Gryphon Centre next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Gryphs are to play the Windsor Lancers Oct. 14 at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre.
