Gryphon hockey women start season with win in lengthy shootout

WINDSOR – It took until the seventh round of the shootout for the Guelph Gryphons to secure a 2-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers in their OUA women’s hockey league season opener Saturday night at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre.

Chihiro Suzuki scored the winner for the Gryphs in the seventh round while Tori Verbeek had tallied for the locals in the third round to keep the shootout going.

The game was the first league outing as interim head coach for Guelph native Katie Mora. She was promoted after head coach took a leave of absence to become an assistant coach in the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Maggie Mitani gave Windsor the early lead Saturday as she hit for a power-play goal late in the second period. Maggie Peterson assisted on the play.

Alexie Olivier pulled the Gryphs even on an unassisted effort with 4:52 to go in regulation time.

The Gryphs outshot Windsor 42-29, but were scoreless on five power plays while the Lancers went 1-for-6 on their power play.

Martina Fedel made 28 saves in the Gryphon net including six in the seven-minute overtime period. Cadence Peticlerc had 41 saves for Windsor with one coming in OT.

The loss leaves Windsor at 0-1-0-1.

The Gryphs (0-0-1-0) are to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1-0-0) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
