Gryphon hockey women use first-period goals to top TMU

TORONTO – A pair of first-period goals sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Guelph led 2-0 at the end of the first period before TMU scored the lone goal of the second.

Tori Verbeek, Jaime Magoffin and Reese Coffey had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Hannah Tait assisted on all three goals. Magoffin also had an assist.

Gaby Gareau scored for TMU with help from Abby DeCorby.

The Gryphs outshot the Bold 31-21 and were scoreless on five power plays while TMU was scoreless on four.

Rookie Sophie Helfenstein picked up her first win in net for the Gryphs with 20 saves while Lauren Griffin had 28 saves for TMU.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 2-1-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record, good for fourth in the OUA West. Laurier Golden Hawks lead at 3-1-0-1 and are followed by the Windsor Lancers (3-0-2-1), Brock Badgers (3-0-0-2), the Gryphs, Western Mustangs (2-1-1-1) and Waterloo Warriors (2-1-0-1).

TMU is third in the OUA East at 1-0-0-4.

The Gryphs are to play 10th-ranked Waterloo at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefield arena Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
