Gryphon hoops men fall to Memorial in overtime

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered 15 points in overtime as they suffered a 102-98 loss to the Memorial Sea-Hawks of St. John’s, NL, in Canadian university men’s basketball preseason play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The loss was the third in four preseason outings for the Gryphs.

The game was a close one throughout with both teams taking turns in the lead. They were tied 21-21 at the end of the first quarter before Memorial took a 45-38 lead into the halftime break. The Gryphs came out hot in the third quarter and grabbed a nine-point lead after four minutes before the Sea-Hawks started a rally that left the score tied 64-64 at the end of the quarter.

The teams scored 23 points apiece in the fourth quarter, Cameron Stanford’s layup for Memorial with 12 seconds to go forcing the five-minute overtime. The Gryphs never led in the extra period.

Dezayne Mingo had 34 points for the Gryphs while Emmanuel Ansah had 22, Viktoras Nausedas had 17 and Dylan McFee had 11. Viktoras Nausedas grabbed 13 rebounds while Mingo had six assists and two steals.

Flynn Boardman-Raffet had 21 points for Memorial while Jodick Moudiandambu had 17, Nicholas Tuff had 15, Josh Reimer had 14 and Stanford and Jason Thompson had 10 apiece. Boardman-Raffet had 12 rebounds and four steals.

The Gryphs shot 45 percent on field goals, 41 percent on three-pointers and 68 percent on free throws and also scored 28 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, six on second chances and 12 from their bench.

The Sea-Hawks shot 41 percent on field goals, 17 percent (5 of 29) on three-pointers and 78 percent on free throws. They also hit for 44 points in the paint, 20 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 38 from their bench.

The result leaves the Gryphs 1-3 in the preseason and Memorial at 2-1.

The Gryphs are to host the Dalhousie Tigers of Halifax in their next preseason match Saturday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC.
