Gryphon hoops men nipped by Ravens at Carleton tournament

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons were edged 76-70 by the defending national champion Carleton Ravens in their first game in this weekend’s Carleton House Laughton Preseason Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday night.

The Gryphs had two players top 20 points in the match as Dezayne Mingo led with 25 points and Emmanuel Ansah had 22. Dylan McFee also had 11.

The Gryphs led 18-15 after the first quarter before Carleton grabbed a 35-32 lead by halftime. The Ravens kept a three-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 54-51.

Ansah also had seven rebounds, the lone block and two steals for the Gryphs while Mingo also had four assists and two steals.

Xavier Spencer led Carleton with 14 points while Noah Simpson had 13 and Emmanuel Ugbah and Augustas Brazdeikis each had 11. Simpson had 10 rebounds while Spencer had five assists, Emanuel Milon had three blocks and two steals.

Guelph shot 38 percent on field goals, 31 percent on three-pointers and 63 percent on free throws. The Gryphs also scored 24 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, two off fast breaks and 13 from the bench.

Carleton shot 46 percent on field goals, 31 percent on three-pointers and 38 percent (6 of 16) on free throws and also collected 48 points in the paint, 10 off turnovers, 19 on second chances, two off fast breaks and 20 from the bench.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 3-5 in the preseason that they are to complete this weekend with games Saturday at 6 p.m. against the UQAM Citadins and Sunday at 12 noon against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Gryphs are to begin their regular season at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre with games against the Ottawa Gee-Gees Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. and Carleton Nov. 4 at 8 p.m.
