Gryphon hoops men nipped by Saskatchewan in preseason

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons were outscored by four points in the final minute of a see-saw game as they were edged 87-83 by the Saskatchewan Huskies in the Carleton House Laughton Preseason Men’s Basketball Tournament Sunday.

The Gryphs dropped all three of their games in the tournament to finish their preseason with a 2-7 record.

Each team saw a six-point lead disappear in the game.

Saskatchewan led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter while the Gryphs were up 36-34 at halftime. The Huskies shot back ahead 59-57 by the end of the third quarter.

Emmanuel Ansah and Raef Wykes each had 20 points for the Gryphs while Viktoras Nausedas and Carl Veltman each had 10. Viktoras Nausedas had 12 rebounds while Ansah had seven assists, Vytas Nausedas had the lone block and Ansah, Luke Trojanowski and Amari N’daw each had a steal.

Alexander Dewar had a game-high 28 points for Saskatchewan while Tyrese Potoma had 18, Kymahni Bent had 13 and Emmanuel Bonsu had 11. Easton Thimm had nine rebounds while Noah Nickel had two assists, Benjamin Rose had the lone block and Bent had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 45 percent on field goals, 36 percent on three-pointers, 85 percent (11 of 13) on free throws and also scored 40 points in the paint, nine off turnovers, 16 on second chances and 44 from the bench.

Saskatchewan shot 41 percent on field goals, 39 percent on three-pointers, 75 percent (11 of 13) on free throws and the Huskies also scored 42 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers, 11 on second chances and 32 from the bench.

The Gryphs are to start their OUA regular season Nov. 3 with a game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
