Gryphon hoops men serve up last-minute turnovers in preseason loss

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons turned the ball over four times and yielded six points in the final 39 seconds of the game as they surrendered an 84-79 decision to the Dalhousie Tigers in U Sports preseason men’s basketball play at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday.

A three-pointer by Shaathan Walker with 56 seconds to go put the Gryphs ahead 79-77, but that was to be their last points of the game. That was Walker’s only basket of the game.

Dalhousie claimed the win with two layup baskets by Nginyu Ngala three free-throw buckets by Malcolm Christie, all scored after Walker’s basket.

The Gryphs led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter and 39-35 at halftime. Dalhousie rallied in the third quarter to go up 63-55 by the end of the quarter.

Emmanuel Ansah led the Gryphs with 21 points while Dezayne Mingo added 20 and Mathew Oliver had 13. Viktoras Nausedas had eight rebounds and Ansah had five while Ansah and Mingo each had three assists. Mingo also had four blocks while Ansah and Carl Veltmann each had two steals.

Ngala collected 20 points for Dalhousie while Alex Ruiz had 19 and Christie added 18. Ruiz grabbed 14 rebounds while Ngala and Lydell Husbands-Browne each had four assists and Spencer Riar had Dalhousie’s lone block. Ngala had six steals and Christie had four.

The Gryphs shot 50 percent on field goals, 38 percent on three-pointers and 73 percent on free throws and also collected 38 points in the paint, 17 off turnovers, nine on second chances and 27 from their bench.

Dalhousie shot 47 percent on field goals, 32 percent on three-pointers and 77 percent on free throws. The Tigers also had 48 points in the paint, 22 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 35 from their bench.

The loss leaves the Gryphs at 1-4 in preseason play while Dalhousie is at 3-3.

The Gryphs are to host the Sheridan College Bruins Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the old Mitchell Athletics Centre.

They’re also to play the Carleton Ravens Friday at 8 p.m., UQAM Citadins Saturday at 6 p.m. and Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Carleton House Laughton Preseason Tournament in Ottawa.
