Gryphon hoops men top Concordia for first win of preseason

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons used a fast start to help hand the Concordia Stingers an 86-75 setback and grab their first win of the OUA men’s basketball preseason Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs grabbed a seven-point lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game as they hit a three-pointer, two jumpers and a layup.

The Gryphs led 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, 41-36 at halftime and 57-45 after the third quarter.

Emmanuel Ansah led the Gryphs with 23 points while Viktoras Nausedas had 15 and Dezayne Mingo and Raef Wykes each had 12. Ansah grabbed nine rebounds while Viktoras Nausedas had seven. Ansah and Wykes each had two assists and Ansah also had two steals.

Jaheem Joseph led Concordia with 21 points while Sami Jahan had 16 and Tyrell Williams collected 14. Joseph also grabbed nine rebounds while Jahan had four steals.

The Gryphs shot 54 percent on field goals in the game, 46 percent on three-pointers and 76 percent on free throws. They also had 24 points in the paint, nine off turnovers, 11 on second chances and 28 from their bench.

Concordia shot 38 percent on field goals, 19 percent (5 of 26) on three-pointers and 53 percent on free throws. They had 40 points in the paint, 23 off turnovers, 10 on second chances and 15 from their bench.

The Gryphs are 1-2 in their preseason following earlier slim losses to the Bishop’s Gaiters and Humber College Hawks. The game was the first against a U Sports team for Concordia who had gone 2-2 against NCAA schools.

The Gryphs are to host the Memorial Sea-Hawks of St. John’s, NL, Saturday at 4 p.m. at the GGAC. The Sea-Hawks are 1-1 as they lost 60-47 to the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton Thursday and defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 74-68 at Laurier Friday.
