Gryphon hoops women clout Humber College Hawks

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons had a pair of 23-point quarters as they dropped the Humber College Hawks 82-46 in OUA women’s basketball preseason play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs turned a 17-11 advantage after the first quarter into a 40-19 lead at halftime that they then stretched to a 63-28 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Alexis Wright was the lone Gryphon to hit double digits in scoring as she had 12 points. However, a total of 15 Gryphons scored at least a point and only Julia Colavecchia (21) and Renee Armstrong (20) played at least 20 minutes of the game.

Alexandra Urban had eight rebounds while Colavecchia grabbed seven. Armstrong and Ella Thomas each had three assists, Hannah Bourdon had three steals and Bourdon, Armstrong and Keryl Ousey each had a block.

Teija Wareham had 13 points for Humber and Sarah Baptie added 11. Wareham also hauled down 10 rebounds while Baptie had two assists, Beverly Omere had a block and Katherine Khorovets and Sidney Crawford each had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 32 percent on three-pointers and 62 percent on free throws. They also scored 40 points in the paint, 31 off turnovers, 21 on second chances and got 40 from their bench.

Humber shot 29 percent on field goals, 13 percent (3 of 24) on three-pointers and 75 percent on free throws. The Hawks also connected for 12 points in the paint, nine off turnovers, two on second chances and received nine from their bench.

The win was the second in as many preseason outings for the Gryphs. They’re to host the Memorial Sea-Hawks of St. John’s, NL, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC. The Sea-Hawks defeated the York Lions 83-60 in their preseason opener Friday at York.
