Gryphon hoops women downed by Calgary Dinos

CALGARY – A slow start by the Guelph Gryphons couldn’t be overcome as they were dropped 74-45 by the Calgary Dinos Thursday at the Calgary Cup university women’s basketball tournament at Calgary’s Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Gryphs scored a lone basket in the first five minutes of the game before attempting a comeback that saw them narrow the gap to 18-15 by the end of the first quarter. Calgary led 36-25 at halftime and 57-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Alexis Wright scored 10 points for the Gryphs while Renee Armstrong netted nine and Julia Colavecchia added eight. Colavecchia grabbed six rebounds while Armstrong had three assists. Wright and Colavecchia each had three assists.

Pollyanna Storie led Calgary with 21 points while Milica Gajic netted 18 and Mya Proctor had 12. Myriam Kone had eight rebounds and five assists while Proctor recorded three steals.

The Gryphs have three wins and two losses in their preseason. They’re to play the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Calgary tournament and the Regina Cougars Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

That’s the final preseason action for the Gryphs who are to host the Ottawa Gee-Gees Nov. 3 in their season opener.
