Gryphon hoops women drop Niagara in preseason play

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons held the Niagara College Knights to less than 10 points in each quarter as they recorded a 59-28 victory in exhibition women’s basketball play Thursday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs topped 10 points in each quarter for the victory.

Guelph led 19-8 at the end of the first quarter, 35-15 at halftime and 47-22 after the third quarter.

Renee Armstrong led the Gryphs with 10 points in 17 minutes of court time while Trinity Papamandjaris, Rain Jhaj and Lucy Tesseyman each had seven points. Jhaj had a Gryphon-high 20 minutes of floor time as the team used a total of 15 players with each getting a minimum of five minutes of game play.

Papamandjaris and Lucy Tesseyman each had nine rebounds while Armstrong had six assists and Jhaj had four steals. Six players each had a block.

Janee Harrison had seven points, six rebounds and two assists for Niagara while Jamra Ronsseau also had two assists and Diana Sasha had four steals. The Knights didn’t have any blocks.

The Gryphs won despite shooting 27 percent (19 of 71) on field goals and 24 percent (7 of 29) on three-pointers. They also shot 67 percent on free throws and scored 20 points in the paint, 13 off turnovers and 14 on second chances. The Gryphon bench scored 31 points.

Niagara shot 19 percent (11 of 57) on field goals, (10 percent (2 of 20) of three-pointers and 40 percent (4 of 10) on free throws. The Knights scored 18 points in the pain, 12 off turnovers and none on second chances and their bench contributed 12 points.

The Gryphs are 3-1 in their preseason and 1-1 against U Sports teams. They’re to complete their preseason the Oct. 13 to 15 weekend at the Calgary Preseason Tournament where they’re to play the Calgary Dinos (6-0 in preseason, 4-0 against U Sports teams), Fraser Valley Cascades (0-1 in preseason, loss to NCAA’s Nevada) and Regina Cougars (2-1 in preseason, 2-0 against U Sports teams).

Guelph is to open its regular season at the GGAC with games against OUA powerhouses Ottawa Gee-Gees Nov. 3 and Carleton Ravens Nov. 4. Game time both days is 6 p.m.
