Gryphon hoops women edged by Memorial Sea-Hawks

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA women’s basketball preseason as they were edged 73-70 by the Memorial Sea-Hawks of St. John’s, NL, Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs had won their other two preseason outings.

The Gryphs had a slow start to fall behind early, but kept chipping away at the gap with a strong second half to get as close as a point with four seconds to go. However, they were forced to foul to get a chance of getting the ball back, but Memorial hit both of the free throws to complete the scoring.

The Sea-Hawks led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, 36-21 at halftime and 57-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Renee Armstrong led the Gryphs with 20 points while Trinity Papamandjaris followed with 12 and Julia Colavecchia added nine. Hannah Bourdon pulled down 10 rebounds while Armstrong and Colavecchia each had five assists. Papamandjaris had four blocks and Bourdon had three steals.

Hannah Green hit for a game-high 26 points for Memorial while Alana Short had 16 and Rebecka Ekstrom collected 15. Green had nine rebounds while Short and Ekstrom each had four assists. Erin Long had a block and Short had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 36 percent on field goals, 39 percent (9 of 23) on three-pointers and 41 percent (7 of 17) on free throws. They also collected 32 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 21 from their bench.

Memorial shot 41 percent on field goals, 28 percent (5 of 18) on three-pointers and 75 percent on free throws and they had 34 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, 23 on second chances and 12 from their bench.

The Gryphs are to complete their preseason at the Calgary Dinos Preseason Tournament Oct. 13 to 15 where they’re to play the host Calgary Dinos, Fraser Valley Cascades and Regina Cougars.
