Gryphon hoops women fall to Queen’s Gaels

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons fell behind in the first quarter and never caught up as they were downed 67-47 by the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s basketball play Friday at Queen’s.

Buoyed by a 10-2 run, the Gaels led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and 40-31 at halftime. Guelph was held to 16 points in the second half including five in the fourth quarter.

Renee Armstrong led the Gryphs with 17 points while Julia Colavecchia had 13 and Macy Weber added six. Hannah Boudon had 11 rebounds and Armstrong had eight while Alexis Wright had three assists, Lucy Tesseyman had three blocks and Tesseyman and Colavecchia each had two steals.

Laura Donavan had 19 points for Queen’s while Bella Gaudet added 12. Emma Weltz had seven rebounds while Gaudet had five steals and Bridget Mulholland had two blocks.

The Gryphs had 45 rebounds, seven blocks and six steals and shot 30 percent on field goals, 22 percent on three-pointers and 25 percent (3 of 12) on free throws. They also scored 24 points in the paint, eight off turnovers, 12 on second chances and received nine from their bench.

The Gaels had 36 rebounds, five blocks and 16 steals and shot 33 percent on field goals, 38 percent on three-pointers and 81 percent on free throws. They took 14 more free throws than the Gryphs. The Gaels also scored 22 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and had 15 from their bench.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 5-4 and Queen’s at 7-1.

The Gryphs are to play the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (1-7) in Oshawa Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m.

That game will bring the 2023 portion of the Gryphon schedule to an end.
