Gryphon hoops women top Fraser Valley in overtime

CALGARY – The Guelph Gryphons scored 14 points in overtime as they handed the Fraser Valley Cascades a 94-87 setback Saturday in the Calgary Cup women’s basketball preseason tournament.

The Gryphs turned in a strong fourth quarter to come back and force the game into extra time.

The Gryphs led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 43-36 at halftime and 68-56 at the end of the third quarter.

Guelph came back from a six-point deficit in the final minute, Julia Colavecchia hitting a three-pointer to tie it with two seconds to play.

While Fraser Valley scored the opening basket of the five-minute overtime, the Gryphs shot ahead for good 43 seconds later after draining a pair of jump shots.

Renee Armstrong led the Gryphs with 23 points while Colavecchia had 18, Alexis Wright had 17 and Alexandra Urban had 14.

Urban hauled down 10 rebounds while Colavecchia had four assists, Armstrong had two blocks and four steals and Hannah Bourdon also had four steals.

Deanna Tuchscherer had 19 points for Fraser Valley while Bernie Leda had 15, Natalie Rathler had 12 and Esther Allison had 10. Allison had six rebounds while Rathler had four assists, Tuchscherer had the lone block and Google Sidhu and Leda each had three steals.

The Gryphs shot 47 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers, 74 percent on free throws and had 42 points in the paint, 28 off turnovers, eight on second chances, 10 on fast breaks and 22 from their bench.

Fraser Valley shot 47 percent on field goals, 40 percent on three-pointers, 72 percent on free throws and had 40 points in the paint, 33 off turnovers, six on second chances, 14 on fast breaks and 40 from their bench.

The Gryphs are 4-2 in their preseason that they’re to complete in the tournament Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against the Regina Cougars.

The Gryphs are to start their regular season Nov. 3 with a game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. They’re also to play the Carleton Ravens Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at the GGAC.
