Gryphon hoops women top Regina to finish preseason

CALGARY – The Guelph Gryphons struck for seven points in the final 70 seconds of the game as they defeated the Regina Cougars 70-63 in the Calgary Cup preseason women’s basketball tournament Sunday.

The Gryphs finished the tournament with two wins and a loss. They also finished their preseason with five wins and two losses.

Renee Armstrong hit three free throws in the final minute and a bit of the game while Trinity Papamandjaris and Hannah Bourdon each added a layup.

Regina led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs grabbed a 36-34 lead by halftime. The teams were tied 50-50 at the end of the third quarter.

Armstrong led the Gryphs with 18 points while Julia Colavecchia had 14 and Papamandjaris added nine. Lucy Tesseyman grabbed 10 rebounds while Colavecchia had five assists, Tesseyman and Papamandjaris each had two blocks and Armstrong and Colavecchia had two steals apiece.

Jade Belmore collected 16 points for Regina while Eden Wells and Maddy Seida each had 11. Belmore also had nine rebounds and three blocks while Dayna Pearce and Wells each had four assists and two steals.

The Gryphs shot 33 percent on field goals, 28 percent on three-pointers and 88 percent on free throws. They also scored 28 points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, 11 on second chances, seven on fast breaks and 14 from the bench.

Regina shot 34 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers and 75 percent on free throws and also scored 24 points in the paint, 12 off turnovers, 15 on second chances, six on fast breaks and 24 from the bench.

Next up for the Gryphs is to be their OUA season opener against the Ottawa Gee-Gees Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. The Gryphs are to play six of their first seven league games at the GGAC.
