Gryphon lacrosse men come back to top Brock Badgers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons recovered from a three-goal deficit to grab their own three-goal lead and then they held on for a 10-9 victory over the Brock Badgers in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Brock led 4-1 early in the second quarter before the Gryphs scored five consecutive goals to lead 6-4 early in the third quarter. They extended the lead to 8-5 by the end of the quarter and the teams traded goals early in the fourth quarter before the Badgers scored a pair in the final minute and a half to close the gap to the final one-goal margin.

Liam Aston had a hat trick for the Gryphs while Robbie Baxter and Ethan Lee scored twice apiece. Ben Doherty, Owen Kelly and Zack Holmes completed the scoring with a goal apiece while Baxter and Lee each had one assist.

Jaden Patterson scored three times for Brock while Avery Steinbach-Parker had two goals and Mitchell Zulian, Andrew Kidd, Brodie Thoms and Faris Owen each had one. Zulian and James Gowland each picked up an assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 24-22. Jacob Hayne had 15 saves for Guelph while Adam Brown had four and Connor O’Toole eight as they shared the goaltending chores for Brock.

Western Mustangs lead the West Division at 3-0 while the Gryphs, Laurier Golden Hawks and McMaster Marauders are tied with 3-1 records. Brock is at 2-1 and is followed by the Toronto Varsity Blues at 1-3, Nipissing Lakers at 1-4 and Laurentian Voyageurs at 0-5.

The Gryphs are to host Toronto Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
