Gryphon lacrosse men drop season opener to Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered five goals in the second quarter as they were downed 9-5 by the Western Mustangs in their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season opener Saturday night at Western’s Mustangs Field.

The teams had scored one goal apiece in the first quarter before Western shot ahead for good in the second quarter, scoring the final three goals of the quarter in the final three minutes of the opening half.

Western extended its lead to 8-3 by the end of the third quarter.

Liam Aston and Ethan Lee scored twice apiece for Guelph while Robbie Baxter had the other goal. Single assists went to Gavin Thibeault and Owen Kelly.

Chris Dong had three goals and two assists for Western while Connor Murphy and Will Carnduff each had two goals. Chris da Silva and Jacob Hickey each had single goals while Max Brook had two assists and Murphy, da Silva and Hickey each had one assist.

Shots on goal were not reported.

Jacob Hayne was in net for the Gryphs while Michael Orlando was in goal for Western.

The Gryphs are to play the Laurier Golden Hawks in the season opener for the Golden Hawks at Waterloo’s University Stadium today (Sept. 10) at 1 p.m.
