Gryphon lacrosse men off to Baggataway Cup tourney

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons doubled the McMaster Marauders Sunday to gain a berth in CUFLA’s Baggataway Cup championship tournament.

The Gryphs scored the first three goals of the game on their way to an 8-4 triumph Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Guelph led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 6-4 after the third quarter.

Ethan Lee, who scored a total of six goals in three regular-season games, tallied five times Sunday. Liam Astin, Gavin Thibeault and Ben Doherty added the other goals while Owen Kelly had two assists and Aston, Thibeault, Liam Dietsch and Robbie Baxter each had one assist.

Lucas Ilic had two goals for McMaster while Graydon Power and Nick Pospisil scored once each. Power and William Nicholls each had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot McMaster 15-10.

Jacob Hayne had six saves for the Gryphs while Colin Korry and Neel Cargill each played half the game for the Marauders. Cargill had three saves in the first half and Korry had four in the second half.

The Gryphs finished second in the Western Conference at 8-2 while McMaster was fifth at 6-4.

The Baggataway Cup is to be held at the Justin Chiu Stadium on the Trent University campus in Peterborough.

The Gryphs are to play the McGill Redbirds in Friday’s quarter-finals at 4:30 p.m.

Winner of that game is to move on to a match with the Western Mustangs in the semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
