Gryphon lacrosse men rally to topple Toronto

GUELPH – After yielding four goals to the Toronto Varsity Blues in the second quarter, the Guelph Gryphons came back with five consecutive goals in the third quarter to surge ahead on their way to a 10-7 victory in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Saturday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Toronto led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter and 6-2 at halftime, but the rally by the Gryphs put them up 7-6 by the end of the third quarter. The third-quarter scoring included four goals in a span of four minutes and 23 seconds.

The Gryphs, who wore their National Day for Truth and Reconciliation orange uniforms, were led by Liam Aston who had four goals and two assists. Ben Doherty added a hat trick while Robbie Baxter scored twice and Trent Gilbert netted a single goal. Kyle Detweiler collected two assists while Baxter, Max Baker and Owen Kelly each had one.

Daniel Clarke and CJ Sarvinis each scored twice for Toronto while Jonathan Murawsky, Neil Bains and Benny Konishi had one goal apiece. Murawsky also had two assists while Declan McPherson had one.

The Gryphs outshot Toronto 22-16.

Jacob Hayne had nine saves for the Gryphs while Benjamin Rishikof had 12 for Toronto.

The Gryphs had 32 players suited up for the game while Toronto had 17.

Guelph is second in the West Division at 4-1. They trail the Western Mustangs who are at 5-0, but are followed by the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2), McMaster Marauders (3-2), Brock Badgers (2-1), Nipissing Lakers (1-4), Toronto (1-4) and Laurentian Voyageurs (0-5).

The Gryphs are to play Nipissing at North Bay Sunday at 2 p.m.
