Gryphon lacrosse men stingy in win over McMaster

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons held the McMaster Marauders to a single goal as they recorded an 8-1 victory in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs scored six times before the Marauders got their lone goal with just over two and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

The Gryphs scored once in the first quarter, twice in the second quarter and three times in the third quarter.

Nicholas Volkov had a hat trick for the Gryphs while Gavin Thibeault added a pair of goals. Single goals were collected by Ben Doherty, Matt Allen and Robbie Baxter. Doherty and Liam Aston had two assists apiece while Owen Kelly also had an assist.

Ryan Ames scored for McMaster, with help from Preston Gear.

The Gryphs outshot the Marauders 15-8.

The goaltenders, Jacob Hayne of the Gryphs and Colin Korry of McMaster, each had seven saves.

The Gryphs (7-2) and Western Mustangs (7-0) are tied for first in the West Division with Western having two games in hand. McMaster was third at 6-3.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Sunday with a game against Western at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 1 p.m.
