Gryphon men give up five in a row in loss to Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons yielded five consecutive goals as they were downed 6-1 by the Windsor Lancers in OUA men’s hockey play Friday at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre.

Windsor scored the lone goal of the first period before the Gryphons tied it early in the second on a goal by Emmett Gordon, assisted by Griffin Wilson. The Lancers won it with five consecutive goals, three of them coming in the second period.

Of Windsor’s goals, two came on the power play and two more came with the Lancers playing shorthanded.

Scoring a goal apiece for Windsor were Jake Durham, Mason Kohn, Matt McNamara, Nic Pavia, Grant Spence and Aaron Chiarot. Ty Toews, Durham and Dylan Schives each had two assists while Hunter Holmes, McNamara, Kohn, Johnny Ulicny, Stef Dobrich and David Jesus each had one.

Windsor outshot the Gryphs 43-39. The Lancers went 2-for-3 on their power play and kept the Gryphs scoreless on six power plays.

Tanner Wickware started in net for the Gryphs, but was replaced by Colton Incze 57 seconds into the third period after Windsor’s fifth goal. Wickware had 31 saves and Incze had six.

The Gryphs are eighth in the West Division at 11-4-0 while Windsor is fourth at 13-9-2.

The Gryphs have three games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to play the Western Mustangs at Western’s Thompson Arena in London Friday at 7 p.m., the Toronto Metropolitan Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Feb. 3 at 7:15 p.m. and Western at the Gryphon Centre Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
