Gryphon men go ahead early on way to win by 21 points

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it as they downed the Windsor Lancers 104-83 in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs went on a 19-5 run in the middle of the opening quarter on their way to a 27-18 lead at the end of the quarter. They held Windsor to 10 points in the second quarter to lead 47-28 at halftime and they were up 70-60 at the end of the third quarter.

Viktoras Nausedas had 22 points for the Gryphs while Dylan McFee came off the bench to add 18, Emmanuel Ansah had 16, Dezayne Mingo had 15 and Carl Veltmann had 12. Ansah had 11 rebounds while Nausedas had 10. Ansah also had six assists, two steals and two blocks while Mingo had five assists and Nausedas had two blocks.

Yohann Sam and Denzel Cummins both came off the bench to lead Windsor with 18 and 17 points respectively. Xavier Ochu netted 15 while Anthony Mensah had 10. Sam had six rebounds and four steals while Lorenzo Barbieri had three assists.

The Gryphs shot 52 percent on field goals, 38 percent on three-pointers and 89 percent on free throws. They also hauled down 44 rebounds and had 20 assists, 19 turnovers, 22 points off turnovers, 24 second-chance points, 42 points in the paint and 31 from the bench.

Windsor shot 40 percent on field goals, 17 percent on three-pointers and 74 percent on free throws and also had 24 rebounds, eight assists, 16 turnovers, 14 points off turnovers, seven second-chance points, 46 points in the paint and 39 from the bench.

Guelph is fourth in the West Division at 4-8 while Windsor is fifth at 2-8.

The Gryphs are to play twice at GGAC in the next week as they’re to host Lakehead Thunderwolves (sixth in Central Division at 4-8) Friday at 8 p.m. and Brock Badgers (fourth in Central at 5-6) Saturday at 8 p.m.
