Gryphon men suffer loss to Lakers at Nipissing

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their sixth consecutive loss in OUA men’s basketball play as they were defeated 88-80 by the Nipissing Lakers Friday at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs entered the fourth quarter trailing by six and got the gap down to four points with 6:30 to go before the Lakers went on a 10-2 run to shoot ahead before Guelph again got the gap down to five points with 2:01 to go, but couldn’t get any closer.

Nipissing led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter, 40-28 at halftime and 64-58 after the third quarter.

Dylan McFee had 15 points for the Gryphs while Dezayne Mingo netted 13, Adrian Morra had 11 and Emmanuel Ansah collected 10. Viktroas Nausedas grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals while Mingo had seven assists and two blocks.

Alvin Icyogere connected for 23 points for Nipissing while Darnaz Mabanza had 17, Taijon Graham added 13 and Marcus Moore chipped in with 10. Graham had 17 rebounds and two blocks while Mabanza had five assists and had two steals and Moore also had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 41 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers and 65 percent on free throws. They also grabbed 36 rebounds, had 18 assists, two blocks and three steals, committed 11 turnovers, had 32 points in the paint, six points off Nipissing turnovers, 11 second-chance points and received 35 points from their bench.

The Lakers shot 41 percent on field goals, 34 percent on three-pointers and 68 percent on free throws and had 47 rebounds, 20 assists, two blocks, seven steals, seven turnovers, 36 points in the paint, 12 points off Gryphon turnovers, 13 second-chance points and 41 points from their bench.
