Gryphon men to battle for OUA bronze with Brock

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons were swept 3-0 by the McMaster Marauders in OUA men’s volleyball semifinal play Friday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.

McMaster won 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

Jonathan Pickett had 16 kills and a block for the Gryphs while Joshua Glasbergen had five kills and a block, Cameron Chadwick had three kills and four digs and Nathan Peters also had three kills. Noah Romero Marshall had Guelph’s lone ace and also had two digs while Daniel Pickett had eight digs, Blake Brand had two digs, Thomas Pugsley had 21 assists and Jack Richards had five assists.

Topping the categories for McMaster were Brendan Mills had 15 kills and five blocks, Maxime Gratton and Matthew Rugosi each had six digs, Robbie Fujisawa had 35 assists and Gratton, Brady Paterson, Tyler Pavelic and Fujisawa each had an ace.

The Gryphs had 30 kills, an ace, two blocks, 29 assists, 22 digs and a .225 kill percentage while McMaster had 44 kills, four aces, seven blocks, 43 assists, 27 digs and a .402 kill percentage.

The Queen’s Gaels defeated the Brock Badgers 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 27-25, 25-20) in Friday’s other semifinal.

The Gaels are to play the Marauders at McMaster in the OUA Forsyth Cup championship match next Friday at McMaster. Both teams advance to the U Sports national championship tournament March 14 to 17 at Queen’s.

They’ll be joined at the national championship tournament by the winner of the bronze-medal match between the Gryphons and Brock at Brock March 9 at 7 p.m.
