Gryphon Moretuzzo OUA defensive player of week

GUELPH – Defensive back Anthony Moretuzzo of the Guelph Gryphons has been named OUA football’s defensive player of the week for his performance in Saturday’s season-opening win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The second-year Gryphon led all players with seven tackles in the game including two sacks for a loss of eight yards. He also returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Western Mustangs quarterback Evan Hillock was the offensive player of the week while Ethan Bayfield of the Laurier Golden Hawks was the special teams player of the week.

Hillock completed 13 of 18 pass attempts for 305 yards in the 83-0 whitewash of the York Lions. Five of the receptions went for TDs.

Bayfield returned two kickoffs for 56 yards and eight punts for 60 yards. He also returned two missed field goals out of the Golden Hawks’ endzone including one on the final play of the game. The Golden Hawks defeated the Queen’s Gaels 11-10.
