Gryphon rugby men bring home bronze from Nationals
LANGLEY, B.C. – The Guelph Gryphons repeated as national bronze medalists as they downed the Memorial Sea-Hawks of St. John’s, Nfld., Sunday at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship tournament.
The Gryphs held the Sea-Hawks scoreless until midway through the second half. By that time, the Guelph side had scored 31 points.
The Gryphs led 19-0 at halftime while Memorial scored a pair of second-half tied, the final one coming with eight minutes to play.
The Gryphs struck for six tries in the match.
Joshua Ince scored the first two tries as Guelph built a 14-0 lead in the first 21 minutes. Tomas Dallan converted both before adding a try of his own late in the opening half.
Jacob Ince, Ewen Curry and Jack Morris added second-half tries for Guelph. Dallan and Oliver Alpe each had a convert.
Jack McCarthy scored both tries for Memorial while James Clarke kicked a convert.
The top-seeded UBC Thunderbirds claimed their third consecutive national-championship win with a 41-7 romp over the second-seed Victoria Vikes in the gold-medal match.
The Thunderbirds had defeated the fifth-seed Gryphs 30-10 in the semifinals.
