Gryphon rugby men finish regular season undefeated

GUELPH – The defending champion Guelph Gryphons completed an unbeaten regular season when they dropped the Western Mustangs 54-7 in OUA men’s rugby play Saturday at Varsity Field.

The Mustangs opened the scoring four minutes into the game before the Gryphs ran to a 35-7 by halftime.

The Gryphs got single tries from eight players – Rhys Collins, Owen Williams, Tomas Dallon, Ewen Curry, David Scollon, Kobe Faust, Jacob Ince and Adam Ford. Dallan added seven converts.

Jackson McLean had the try for Western while Will Matthews booted the convert.

The Gryphs finish atop the standings at Guelph 6-0-0 and six bonus points for 29 points while Brock Badgers are second at 5-0-1 with three bonus points for 24 points and Queen’s Gaels are third at 4-2-0 with five bonus points for 21 points. Laurier Golden Hawks are at 4-2-0 with three bonus points for 19 points and Waterloo Golden Hawks are at 3-3-0 with three points for 15 points to round out the top five.

The Gryphs are to get a bye in next weekend’s quarter-finals and are to host a semifinal Nov. 3.

OUA final is set for Nov. 11.
