Gryphon rugby women bounce back by bouncing Western

GUELPH – The fifth-ranked Guelph Gryphons bounced back from their slim loss to the second-ranked Queen’s Gaels with a dominating 43-0 victory over the ninth-ranked Western Mustangs Sunday at Varsity Field.

The Gryphs scored a pair of tries in the first seven minutes to grab a lead they never looked like losing.

The hosts were up 24-0 on the hot afternoon after scoring four tries in the first half. They added three more in the second half.

Kennedy Feasby struck for two of the tries while single tries were added by Seema Abouchacra, Taylor McKnight, Brianna Martey, Gerry Atkins and Abby Auger. Tausani Levale kicked two converts while Stephanie Svaikauskas and Karenna Ottywill kicked one apiece.

Queen’s leads the league at 5-0 with four bonus points for 24 points while the Gryphs are second at 4-1 with five bonus points for 21. Western and the Brock Badgers are both at 3-2 with three bonus points for 15 while the Toronto Varsity Blues are at 3-2 with two bonus points for 14. McMaster Marauders follow at 2-3 with three bonus points for 11 while the Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors are both at 2-3 with two bonus points for 10. Trailing are the Trent Excalibur at 1-4 with a bonus point for five and the York Lions at 0-5 with no bonus points.

Top six teams qualify for the playoffs. Top two will get byes in the quarter-finals and are to host a semifinal match Oct. 21. The OUA final is set for Oct. 28 and is to be hosted by the highest-surviving semifinal victor.

The Gryphs are to wrap up their regular season Saturday with a game against the Lions at York’s Alumni Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
