Gryphon rugby women to play Queen’s for national bronze

QUEBEC CITY – The Guelph Gryphons will play for bronze in the U Sports national women’s rugby championship tournament Sunday.

And they’ll face a familiar foe in that game to decide third place in the tournament, the Queen’s Gaels.

The two OUA teams in the national tournament suffered losses Friday in the semifinals.

The Gryphs were blanked 16-0 by the Victoria Vikes while Queen’s was edged 10-8 by the host Laval Rouge et Or.

Victoria was held to a single try in the 65th minute of the 70-minute game in the win over the Gryphs, but the Vikes kicked three penalty goals.

The Vikes led 6-0 at halftime after Maggie MacKinnon booted a pair of penalty goals in the first 10 minutes of the game.

MacKinnon added another penalty goal two minutes into the second half before Centennial CVI graduate Emmie Pierce of Morriston scored the game’s lone try. MacKinnon kicked the conversion.

In the other semifinal, a comeback attempt by the Queen’s Gaels fell a convert short.

Laval led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a penalty goal midway through the half.

The Rouge et Or extended their lead with a converted try in the fourth minute of the second half.

Queen’s got on the board four minutes later with their own penalty goal and then 20 minutes after that scored their unconverted try.

The Gryphs and Queen’s are to meet for the third time this season when they battle for national bronze Sunday at 1 p.m.
