Gryphon rugby women’s rally overcome by late try by Queen’s

KINGSTON – The fourth-ranked Guelph Gryphons were edged 25-20 by the second-ranked Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s rugby play Saturday at Queen’s.

The host Gaels scored the winning try in the final two minutes of the game to give them their second consecutive win by five points over the Gryphs as the Gaels had defeated the Gryphs 29-24 in last year’s OUA final.

The loss was the first setback of the season for the Gryphs.

Rachel Callum scored the winning try for Queen’s with just over a minute to go and Lizzie Gibson kicked the convert.

Queen’s led 18-6 at halftime before the Gryphs rallied in the second half to grab a two-point lead.

Cullum and Carmen Izyk had tries in the first half for the Gaels who also had a penalty try.

The points scored by the Gryphs were the first allowed by Queen’s this season.

Queen’s leads the league at 4-0 and are followed by the Gryphs, Brock Badgers and Western Mustangs each at 3-1, Laurier Golden Hawks, Toronto Varsity Blues and McMaster Marauders each at 2-2, Waterloo Warriors at 1-3 and York Lions and Trent Excalibur are each at 0-4.

The Gryphs are to host eighth-ranked Western Sunday at 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
