Gryphon soccer men edge Windsor Lancers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons used a goal 15 minutes into the second half to edge the Windsor Lancers 2-1 in OUA men’s soccer play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The teams had scored once apiece four minutes apart midway through the first half.

Martin Popp connected for the winning goal for Guelph.

Damian Truong, who assisted on Popp’s goal, had scored the game’s first goal in the 20th minute.

Giovanni Magliaro responded in the 24th minute for Windsor.

The Gryphs dominated possession, outshooting the Lancers 14-3 including 7-1 in shots on goal. They also took 10 corner kicks while Windsor took one.

However, the Lancers were called for 15 fouls to nine for the Gryphs including eight in the second half to three for the Gryphs.

Guelph and Laurier Golden Hawks are tied for fifth in the West Division, but the Gryphs (3-2-1) have two games in hand on the Golden Hawks (3-4-1). The Gryphs have three wins in their last four games.

York Lions (5-1-2) lead the division while the McMaster Marauders (5-3-0) are second, Brock Badgers (4-2-0) third and Western Mustangs (3-1-3) fourth. Waterloo Warriors (1-4-2) are seventh, Windsor (0-3-4) eighth and Algoma Thunderbirds (0-4-3) ninth.

The Gryphs and Lancers are to meet again Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Windsor’s Alumni Stadium.
