Gryphon soccer men fall to McMaster’s lone goal

HAMILTON – A goal in the 12th minute stood to be the only goal of the game as the McMaster Marauders slipped by the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 in OUA men’s soccer play Saturday at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium.

Cristian Alfieri scored the goal for the Marauders with help from Sachin Sargeant.

McMaster outshot the Gryphs 7-6 and took seven corner kicks to Guelph’s five.

Play was halted for 14 Gryphon fouls and five McMaster fouls. The frustrated Gryphs were shown the yellow card four times and the red card to Patrick Perriel with seven minutes to go in regulation time after he was displayed the yellow card for the second time. All of the cards, including the lone yellow to McMaster, came in the second half when the Gryphs were called for eight fouls to two for the Marauders.

Brock Badgers lead the West Division at 7-2-0 and are followed by the York Lions (6-1-2), McMaster (6-4-0), Western Mustangs (4-1-4), the Gryphs (4-3-1), Laurier Golden Hawks (3-5-1), Waterloo Warriors (1-5-3), Windsor Lancers (0-4-4) and Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6-3).

The Gryphs are to play York at the Lions Stadium Friday at 8:15 p.m. and host Laurier at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
