Gryphon soccer men hand Windsor another setback

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons yielded the opening goal of the game before rallying for a 3-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers in OUA men’s soccer play Sunday at Windsor’s Alumni Stadium.

It was Guelph’s second win over Windsor in three days as they had won 2-1 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday night.

Frankie Facchineri opened the scoring for Windsor in the 21st minute. Giovanni Magliaro assisted on the goal.

The Gryphs squared the score on a goal by Cedric MacNay eight minutes later. Parmpreet Johan collected an assist.

Juliano Campedelli gave the Gryphs the lead with an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute.

Cameron Clack added the game’s final goal as he scored for Guelph in the 76th minute.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 9-8 overall and 4-2 in shots on goal. The Gryphs took five of the game’s seven corner kicks and they were called for 19 fouls, 12 in the second half, while Windsor was whistled for 12.

The win leaves the Gryphs fourth in the West Division at 4-2-1. York Lions lead at 6-1-2 and are followed by the Brock Badgers at 6-2-0, McMaster Marauders at 5-4-0, Guelph, Western Mustangs at 3-1-4, Laurier Golden Hawks at 3-4-1, Waterloo Warriors at 1-4-3, the Lancers at 0-4-4 and Algoma Thunderbirds at 0-6-3.

The Gryphs are to battle eighth-ranked McMaster at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
