Gryphon soccer men nipped by Western in season opener

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons started their OUA men’s soccer campaign with a 2-1 loss to the Western Mustangs at Western’s Mustangs Field Monday.

The Gryphs yielded a pair of goals to Western’s Charlie Bontis about five minutes apart after half an hour of play in the first half.

Patrick Perriel tallied for the Gryphs with around eight minutes to go in regulation time. Parmpreet Johal assisted on the play.

After being held without a shot in the first half while Western had seven, the Gryphs outshot their hosts 7-3 in the second half. Overall, Western had four shots on target during the game while the Gryphs had three.

While both teams had two saves in the game, the Mustangs had three corner kicks to two for Guelph. Western’s corner kicks all came in the first half while Guelph’s both came in the second half.

While the Gryphs pressed in the second half, they were whistled for eight fouls while Western was called for five. Guelph had been called for all six fouls called in the opening half. Each team was issued a single yellow card.

The two teams are to play again Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 3:15 p.m.
